On 5. June 2011 in place of Macedonia an early election to Parliament ( Macedonian Собрание , Albanian  Kuvendi ) instead. The opposition had been calling for a new election since the end of 2010 and had boycotted the country's legislative body since the beginning of 2011 . The previous parliamentary election took place in 2008.

Starting position

28 January 2011 boycotted the Social Democrats (short SDSM ), together with the Albanian party New Democracy (short- DR and three other smaller parties), the Macedonian Parliament indefinitely. The reason they cited was that Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski ( VMRO-DPMNE ) had been severely restricting the freedom of the press in the country for some time and that he and his family were engrossed in corruption. For two years now, the Albanian Democratic Party ( PDSH for short ) has also boycotted parliament. With the non-participation of these parties in future parliamentary sessions, the number of MPs from the opposition parties fell to just two who were independents. On March 16, the Democratic Union for Integration ( BDI for short ) boycotted the parliamentary session, so the boycott also extended to the governing parties .

Before that, the PDSH returned to parliament and ended its boycott. On April 16 the parliament was dissolved; by then, all the electoral law reforms long called for by the opposition had been implemented. The Social Democrats continued their boycott.

Course of the elections

The polls were very calm; there were almost no incidents. However, the non-governmental organization MOST reported some irregularities. It was mainly about voters who photographed their ballot papers and in the west of the country also about the voting of individual voters for several family members. MOST was present on election day with around 3,700 observers, who were present at around 70% of the polling stations. International organizations such as the ODIHR and the OSCE were also present with around 300 observers.

The turnout was a lot higher than in the last parliamentary elections. According to the State Election Commission, around 53.86% had participated in the polls by 5 p.m. (2008: approx. 45%, 2006: approx. 42%). There were regional differences between the north-east (over 61%) and the north-west (around 42%) of the country, where it was also lowest for the latter. The polling stations closed at 7 p.m.

Government formation

As in the last elections, politicians from the two victorious parties will also sit in the next government, i.e. from the VMRO-DPMNE and the Albanian BDI. After two weeks of talks on forming a government, the two parties reached an agreement on June 25th. It stipulates that the BDI provides the minister in the Ministry of Justice, Defense, Environment and Economics. The Albanian party also provides two deputy prime ministers. The promises of party chairman Ahmeti were therefore not fulfilled, either to provide the speaker of parliament or to head the foreign or interior ministries.

In the opposition, the SDSM (in a coalition with the PAE of Fijat Canoski), the PDSH and the RDK will sit first.
