history

Party flag

The beginnings of the Partia Demokratike Shqiptare go back to February 13, 1994, when the Party for Democratic Prosperity of the Albanians was founded under its chairman Arbën Xhaferi through a split from the Party for Democratic Prosperity . This party merged on June 11, 1997 with the small Albanian party, the People's Democratic Party under Ilyaz Halimi . On July 6, 1997, the founding party congress took place and the new name was Partia Demokratike Shqiptare . The first party leader was Arbën Xhaferi.

In 2001, party leader Xhaferi was one of the signatories of the Ohrid Framework Agreement , which ended the inter-ethnic conflict in the country .

On June 30, 2007, Menduh Thaçi took over the party leadership . On June 2, 2008, the Democratic Prosperity Party merged with the PDSH under its chairman Abdulhadi Vejseli .

In the parliamentary elections in 2008 , the PDSH received a total of 8.26 percent of the vote and was thus able to secure 11 of the 120 seats. Shortly after the elections, some party members separated and founded the New Democracy , which had four seats in parliament until 2011, while the PDSH had seven MPs. Since the party previously resigned from the coalition government with the VMRO-DPMNE because Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski (chairman of the VMRO-DPMNE) did not recognize the Republic of Kosovo , new elections were announced beforehand. The VMRO-DPMNE then entered into an alliance with the Democratic Union for Integration . Until the next parliamentary elections in 2011, the PDSH was in the opposition together with the Social Democrats and the Party of the European Future .

In the 2011 elections , the PDSH secured 8 of the 123 seats (a total of 5.89 percent of the votes) and has since been back in the opposition.

On August 15, 2012, the former leader of the PDSH, Arbën Xhaferi, died in Skopje after a serious illness .
