In April 2014, elections for the President and Parliament were held in the Republic of Macedonia . The first round of the presidential election took place on April 13, 2014, with incumbent President Gjorge Ivanov receiving the most votes with 52%. However, since he was not supported by 50% of all registered voters, a runoff election took place on April 27, 2014, parallel to the parliamentary election, which Ivanov won. The parliamentary election was won by the VMRO-DPMNE-led government coalition.

Parties and coalitions

Fourteen political parties and coalitions took part in the election after submitting lists of candidates for MPs in at least one of the country's six constituencies and abroad. Three of them, VMRO-DPMNE, SDSM and DUI, submitted their lists of candidates in all nine constituencies.

VMRO-DPMNE

The coalition led by VMRO-DPMNE consisted of 22 parties: VMRO-DPMNE, the Socialist Party of Macedonia, the Democratic Union, the Democratic Renewal of Macedonia, the Democratic Party of the Turks, the Democratic Party of Serbs in Macedonia, the Union of Roma in Macedonia , United Emancipation Party, Justice Party, Macedonia Democratic Action Party, Macedonian Wallachian Party, Roma Integration Party, Bosniak Democratic Party, Roma Democratic Forces, Macedonian Standing Radical Association who have favourited New Liberal Party, Popular Movement for Macedonia, VMRO Democratic Party, VMRO-United, Macedonian Organization of the Fatherland for Radical Renewal - Vardar-Aegean-Pirin TMORO - VEP, Macedonian Alliance and VMRO - Macedonian.

SDSM

The coalition led by the SDSM consisted of nine parties: the Social Democratic Union of Macedonia, the New Social Democratic Party, the Liberal Democratic Party, United for Macedonia, the Party for the Movement of Turks in Macedonia, the Party for the Complete Emancipation of the Roma of Macedonia, the Serbian Party of Macedonia, the Democratic Alliance of Vlachs and the Sandžak List.

GROM

The alliance led by the Citizen Option for Macedonia (GROM) consisted of the Citizen Option for Macedonia, the Liberal Party, the Serbian Progressive Party in Macedonia, the Union of Tito's Left Forces and the Party of Free Democrats.

SDSM's Zoran Zaev said that the elections were about “choosing whether [Macedonians] will support the struggle for freedom and the right to a better life or continue with state theft,” Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski said: “We need a majority so that nobody can blackmail us and we can keep up with the program [...] that would lead Macedonia into the EU and NATO. "

Result

The incumbent government, led by VMRO-DPMNE, won 42.98% of the vote to claim victory over SDSM with 25.34% and DUI with 13.71%. The 123 seats in the Sobranie were won by six political parties and coalitions, with VMRO-DPMNE winning 61 seats, SDSM 34 seats, DUI 19 seats, DPA 7 seats, and GROM and NDP 1 seat each.
