Nikola Poposki ( Macedonian Никола Попоски ; born October 24, 1977 in Skopje ) was Foreign Minister of the Republic of Macedonia from 2011 to 2016 .

Life

Poposki completed his bachelor's degree in economics at the University of Skopje and the University of Nice . He completed his master's degree in 2004 at the European University of Rennes and the University of Skopje. In 2005 he received the Master of Arts in European Economic Studies at the Europakolleg in Brussels .

Political activity

Poposki is a member of the VMRO-DPMNE party . He first worked in the Macedonian embassy in France (until 2004) before moving to DEPFA Bank in Ireland in 2005 as a client manager . From 2006 to 2009 he was team leader of the Joint Research Center at the European Commission and finally from 2010 to 2011 his country's ambassador to the European Union. In July 2011, he moved to the Gruevski cabinet as Foreign Minister. As one of his most important goals he saw the solution of the name dispute with Greece . During the refugee crisis in Europe from 2015 onwards, he was responsible for the closure of the Western Balkans route via Macedonia.
