Ernst Gottschald (born August 8, 1795 in Irfersgrün , Vogtland , † January 24, 1871 in Plauen ) was a German administrative lawyer and municipal official in the Kingdom of Saxony.

Life

Gottschald studied law at the University of Leipzig . In 1815 he became active in the Corps Saxonia Leipzig . In 1818 he got a job as town clerk in Plauen . From 1828 he was a paid council member, from November 4, 1832 to August 11, 1865 mayor of the city of Plauen. After the introduction of the General City Code for the Kingdom of Saxony on February 2, 1832, he was the city's first full-time mayor. The official title of "Lord Mayor" was only introduced in 1882. Gottschald made particular merits in the reconstruction of Plauen after the great city fires, which also occurred after 1644 in 1859 and 1861. During his almost 33-year tenure, Plauen's population rose from 8,600 to 19,300. As mayor, Gottschald was a member of the First Chamber of the Saxon Estates Assembly . With his petition he achieved that the Plauen Lyceum was the only grammar school in the Vogtland to be preserved. In 1851/52 he was Vice President of the Saxon State Parliament.
