etymology

The name of the city is derived from the curved riverbed of the Kriva River. In the center of the city, the rushing mountain river Duračka Reka flows into the Reka Kriva river.

The original name of Kriva Palanka was Turkish Eğri Dere , which means "curved river".

history

The city is one of the youngest cities in North Macedonia. It was founded by the vizier Bajram Pasha during the Ottoman rule. This foundation in 1633 is attested by a stone slab with Arabic characters at the entrance to the fortress of Kriva Palanka. This stone slab is now in the Skopje Museum .

In order to strengthen the rule of the city, a fortress was built, which also served to maintain security with regard to the passing caravans from Skopje, Thessaloniki and Dubrovnik . As early as 1661, the Ottoman writer Evliya Çelebi described Kriva Palanka as a city with around 800 households. In 1689 the people from the north-east of North Macedonia organized an uprising from Kriva Palanka. This is known as Karpoš .

Rich, influential traders and craftsmen traveled in the 19th century to bring new ideas to the city. The social and economic conditions developed favorably for Kriva Palanka. The mining tradition from the 12th century was also renewed and the iron mines reopened. During this time one of the first Slavic Macedonian preachers worked, Joakim Krčovski , who, with the help of local traders, printed his famous five books in the vernacular from 1814 to 1819. With it, the need for literacy developed, and schools were opened.

The Kriva Palanka region was liberated from Ottoman rule in 1912. The Serbs ruled from 1912 to 1915 and the Bulgarians from 1915 to 1918 . In 1918 Macedonia and Kriva Palanka became part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia .

Between the two world wars, Kriva Palanka experienced more economic regression than progress. The inability to secure normal living conditions generated a massive wave of emigration to the United States and South America, among others . During the Second World War , the citizens of Kriva Palanka played an active role in the fight against the fascists. 128 civilians and 139 soldiers in the region fell victim to this defensive war.

After the liberation on October 8, 1944, the creation of a Macedonian state in Yugoslavia began. A new phase of development began. Many cultural institutions such as the city library, cinema and cultural center were built, as well as a medical center and new schools. Factories, textile and carpet production, forestry, mining and agricultural cooperatives sprang up. Work was also carried out to improve the entire infrastructure and living conditions, water systems were constructed, and new roads and buildings were built. After the dissolution of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, an independent and sovereign Macedonian state was created and reformed on September 8, 1991. Kriva Palanka thus received its first pluralistic, communal order.

The majority of the population consists of Macedonians and other minorities. Many families have more than four children, so the population is increasing.
