Basic information on the classification of localities

The villages ( Macedonian naseleni mesta ) Nordmazedoniens after settlement geographical and socio-economic criteria in urban (cities, mazed. Gradovi ) and rural (villages, mazed. Sela ) divided. There are currently a total of 1762 localities in North Macedonia, of which 34 are cities and 1728 villages.

141 of the rural settlements no longer have permanent residents due to depopulation, and many of the other rural settlements also have very few inhabitants. 57.8% of the inhabitants of North Macedonia live in the 34 urban settlements, 20.5% alone in the largest city of Skopje , which is also the only place with more than 100,000 inhabitants.

This classification of the localities is independent of the political division of North Macedonia into 84 municipalities . Ten of the municipalities are wholly or partly within the urban area of ​​Skopje; At the political level, these together form the city ​​of Skopje , a local authority with a special status. The remaining 33 urban localities are each capital of a municipality of the same name. 41 other municipalities consist exclusively of rural areas.
