history

The Socialist Republic of Macedonia within the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia had last consisted of 34 Opštini before the country's independence.

In September 1996, Macedonia was reorganized into a total of 123 Opštini. At the same time as the new smaller opštini, eight statistical regions were created.

By the new Territorial Administration Act of August 11, 2004, the state was now divided into 84 Opštini. The previous 123 Opštini were partially combined, but in the greater Skopje area the number of Opštini was increased from eight to ten.

In 2013, those of Drugovo, Oslomej, Vraneštica and Zajas were added to Opština Kičevo, thereby disbanding them.
