The M4 Avtopat is a motorway in North Macedonia . 91 of 211 kilometers have been developed as the actual motorway.

The M4 is part of the Corridor VIII and the European roads 65 and 852 .

Course of the road

The M4 branches off from the M1 at Miladinovci and, as a bypass highway , bypasses the capital Skopje from east to north to west. At Tetovo it makes a bend to the south and continues as a dead straight to Gostivar . From then on, the M4 is developed as a two-lane national road and leads over a winding route to the Straža Pass and then on the other side down to Kičevo . The last section to the Albanian border at Qafë Thana / Čafasan is an ordinary country road connecting villages. The M5 branches off at Podmolje on Lake Ohrid and connects nearby Ohrid with the M4. Before the border crossing, the motorway also bypasses the city of Struga in the north .

State of development

In November 2013, an agreement was signed between the Macedonian government and a Chinese road construction company, according to which construction work on the Kičevo – Ohrid section should begin in early 2014 and convert it into a motorway. The 56.7 kilometer will still be built in 2019. The construction costs have increased significantly.
