Zagračani ( Macedonian Заграчани , Albanian  Zagraçani / Zagraçan ) is a village in the municipality of Struga in southwestern North Macedonia .

geography

The village is about 6 kilometers from Struga and about 10 kilometers from Ohrid Airport. The village is a bit off the European road E852 , which leads from Ohrid and Struga to the Albanian border and ends at Tirana . Neighboring villages are Dolna Belica in the north, Višni in the west , Struga in the east and Šum in the south . Today, the settlement area of Zagračani has almost completely grown together with the buildings of Šum. Zagračani is located on the eastern slope of the Jablanica Mountains , which separates Macedonia and Albania. A brook flows through the village and flows into Lake Ohrid . To the east of the plain is the newer district of Dupčišta ( Dupçishta ).

Population and language

The village has 1,075 inhabitants. The villagers are without exception Albanians who speak the Tuscan dialect of Albanian .

A few decades ago, Aromanians settled in the village , but today they are largely assimilated to the Albanian culture. They were called Vllehë ("Wallachians") by the Albanians .

religion

The residents are Sunni Muslims . A mosque in the center of the village and another new one at the entrance to the village shape the village.

Economy, transport and education

Few of the villagers still make a living from agriculture . The majority work in self-opened shops and businesses in the region. The village is - less today - also dependent on the transfers from the Albanians abroad who invest here.

A fundraising campaign by Albanians abroad in 2006 was used by the Struga community to build a new primary school in the village.
