The Malmo Airport ( IATA code MMX , ICAO code ESMS until 2007 Malmö-Sturup ) is Sweden's fifth largest airport and is located between the towns of Skurup and Svedala in the region Skane . The operating company calls the airport Malmö Airport . It recorded around 2.2 million passengers in 2016.

history

In the 1960s, due to the increased volume of traffic and the associated noise pollution in the city of Malmö, a new location was sought for the Bulltofta airport, which had existed since the 1920s. The first plans for an airfield at this location were published in 1964 and initially received little attention. Major protests arose between 1968 and 1969 when the first land was bought. At that time, the Skåne Nature Conservation Union recognized that one of the largest bird breeding areas in the region was in danger of being destroyed.

The actual construction of the airport began in 1970 and was completed shortly before Christmas 1972. The cost was estimated at 75 million Swedish kronor , but ended up being 133 million SEK. This sum was shared between the state and the city of Malmö, which benefited most from the new building. The new airport replaced the airfield in Malmö 's Bulltofta district .

In 2006 the terminal was renovated and the structural separation between the national and international passenger areas was abolished, which enabled capacity to be increased.
