The Visby Airport ( IATA code : VBY , ICAO code : ESSV ) is the only international airport on the Swedish Baltic Sea island Gotland . The operating company calls it Visby Airport . It is located about five kilometers north-northeast of Visby between Snäckgärdsbaden and Stora Hästnäs.
It opened on January 27, 1942. In October 1942, regular air traffic with three-engine Junkers aircraft began on a grass runway. A flight museum is located in the terminal at that time. There has been an asphalt railway since 1957, a new terminal was built in 1958, the last terminal was built in 1987. From 2001 to 2016, from foundation to dissolution, Visby Airport was the home airport of Gotlandsflyg airline .
The number of visitors to the airport varies greatly with the season. Traffic increases significantly in summer.
