The Luleå Airport is the largest in northern Sweden (airport Norrlands ), the same time a military airfield . It is used both civilly (scheduled and charter flights, Kallax Cargo Airport ) and military. It is located seven kilometers south of the city of Luleå .
Civil airport
With 983,194 passengers in 2010, Luleå Airport was the sixth largest in Sweden after Stockholm / Arlanda , Göteborg / Landvetter , Stockholm-Skavsta , Stockholm / Bromma and Malmö . In contrast to the practice in all other Swedish airports, de-icing fluids (glycol) can be recycled in an environmentally friendly manner in Luleå. Garbage is divided into seven categories. The runway is the longest in Sweden at 3350 meters.
The Nordiskt FlygTeknikCentrum aviation school is located at the airport , where you can study aircraft mechanics , aircraft technicians and, in cooperation with the Luleå University of Technology, aeronautical engineering. The LTU also cooperated with the school until the brand was dissolved .
The nearest commercial airports are Skellefteå (113 km), Kemi-Tornio ( Finland , 115 km), Arvidsjaur (130 km), Oulu (Finland, 165 km) and Gällivare (186 km).
Cargo airport
The same runway is used for civil, cargo and military flights. For cargo flights, it has been the longest modern commercial runway in Sweden since its extension in 2000, according to Kallax Cargo AB. Longer runways for freight traffic can only be found in Northern Europe in Oslo-Gardermoen and Copenhagen-Kastrup . The cargo airport is operated by the Swedish Air Force , which maintains the runway and ensures that there is no snow. Kallax Cargo Airport is controlled by Kallax Cargo AB , two thirds of which is owned by NCC AB and Fastighet AB Norrporten and one third by the city of Luleå .
Military airfield
The airfield was used for military purposes as early as 1944. The airport is home to the largest Swedish air force base , F 21, which uses the same runway as civil flights. Other inner-Swedish air force bases are for example F 7 in Såtenäs near Lidköping and F 17 in Ronneby .
