The Stockholm / Bromma Airport ( IATA : BMA , ICAO : ESSB ; self-description: Bromma Stockholm Airport ) is a regional airport in the Swedish capital Stockholm .

history

Stockholm / Bromma Airport is about seven kilometers from Stockholm city center and was on the edge of the built-up area when construction began in 1933. The Stockholm / Arlanda airport replaced Bromma as a major airport in the early 1960s. Stockholm / Bromma Airport is now also in the middle of the city in the Bromma district of the same name and, due to noise protection regulations, it can only be approached by particularly quiet aircraft and not around the clock.

Airlines and Destinations

Bromma is mainly used for regional transport within Sweden, which is primarily served by smaller aircraft. Golden Air , Malmö Aviation and Gotlandsflyg, among others, start here to Visby and Östersund . International connections exist with Brussels Airlines to Brussels , Finnair to Helsinki (operated by Flybe ) and with British Airways to Århus (operated by Sun Air of Scandinavia ).

Incidents

  • On February 18, 1951, engine 2 (right) of a Vickers Valetta C.1 of the Royal Air Force ( aircraft registration VX514 ) failed . There was also smoke coming from the aft cabin floor and the main radio stopped working. The pilots made an emergency landing at Stockholm / Bromma Airport. During the prevailing snow storm one tried to take off . This failed due to poor climbing performance, and a belly landing was carried out in a clearing, colliding with trees and cables. One crew member was killed; the other 21 inmates survived.
  • On July 14, 1952, a Lockheed 14H Super Electra of the Airtaco (registration number SE-BTN ) crashed during the climb from Stockholm / Bromma airport due to the switching to an almost empty fuel tank. Four of the six inmates died. The machine was on a newspaper flight to Jönköping.
  • On January 15, 1977, a Vickers Viscount 838 (SE-FOZ) rented by Linjeflyg from Skyline crashed into a parking lot in Kälvesta , a suburb of Stockholm, while approaching Stockholm / Bromma Airport . All 22 people on board were killed. Some cars were destroyed and some homes were damaged by fire from the burning aircraft. The accident was triggered by icing of the horizontal stabilizer, which resulted in the aircraft becoming uncontrollable when the landing flaps were extended to the end position. The Swedish pilots were not informed that the aircraft type was susceptible to this form of icing, which occurs frequently in northern Europe in winter (see also Linjeflyg flight 618 ) .
