The Curitiba Airport ( Portuguese Aeroporto Internacional Afonso Pena ) ( IATA code : CWB , ICAO code : SBCT ) is an international commercial airport of Curitiba in Brazil . It is named after the former Brazilian politician Afonso Augusto Moreira Pena , who served as president from 1906 to 1909. The operator is the state airport operator Infraero . The airport is located in the city of São José dos Pinhais and borders Curitiba to the south.
Airlines and Destinations
The airport is mainly served by the three major Brazilian airlines Azul Linhas Aéreas , Gol Linhas Aéreas and LATAM Brasil , which connect Curitiba with all major cities in the country. The only international destinations are served by Aerolíneas Argentinas and Paranair .
The tower (TWR) sends and receives on the frequency 118.55 MHz . The airport has various navigation aids. The runway 15/33 has an instrument landing system (ILS). The non-directional radio beacon (NDB) transmits on the frequency 255 kHz with the identifier PNH . The rotating radio beacon (VOR) transmits on frequency 116.5 MHz with the identifier CTB . A distance measuring equipment (DME) is present.

Incidents
According to the Aviation Safety Network, there are three known fatal accidents near the airport.
- On June 16, 1958 a Convair CV-440-59 of the Brazilian Cruzeiro do Sul ( aircraft registration PP-CEP ) had an accident while approaching Curitiba Airport. The aircraft was pushed to the ground by very strong falling gusts . Of the 26 occupants, all 5 crew members and 16 of the 21 passengers were killed.
- On November 3, 1967, a Handley HPR-7 Herald 214 of Sadia Transportes Aéreos (PP-SDJ) was flown into a mountain 25 kilometers east of it on the approach to Curitiba Airport. In this CFIT ( Controlled flight into terrain ), 21 of the 25 occupants were killed. The cause was a faulty instrument landing approach.
- On August 22, 2007, an Embraer 110P1 Bandeirante crashed after taking off. All two inmates were killed.
