history

Rylsk was first mentioned in 1152 as a large settlement in the principality of Novgorod-Seversky ( Severien ). The name is derived from the Slavic root ryt for dig ; Rylo or Ryla is also the name of a river nearby; rylo also means (pig) snout (see later city arms from the 19th century). The Russian Orthodox Church , however, connects the place name with Saint Iwan Rilski (Russian spelling Rylski ); he is considered the patron saint of the city.

At the beginning of the 13th century, Rylsk was the center of an autonomous principality.

In the middle of the 14th century, the Grand Duchy of Lithuania took over the city. In 1454 the Polish King Casimir IV gave the city as a fief to Prince Ivan Shemyaka, who had fled from Russia. However, his son Vasily Ivanovich submitted to the Grand Duchy of Moscow again in 1522 .

From the 16th to the early 18th century, Rylsk was a defensive point on the southern border of the Russian Empire and at the same time an important trading point with the (Polish) Ukraine .

In 1779 the modern town charter was granted as the administrative center of a district (Ujesds).

During the Second World War , Rylsk was occupied by the German Wehrmacht on October 5, 1941 and recaptured on August 31, 1943 by troops of the Central Front of the Red Army while advancing towards Chernihiv and Pripyat .
