geography

The city is located on the southwestern edge of the Central Russian Plate about 120 km northwest of the Oblast capital Kursk on the Swapa , a right tributary of the Seim in the river system of the Dnieper .

Dmitriev-Lgowski is the administrative center of the Rajons Dmitriev.

history

For the old settlement Swapsk (founding time unknown) on the Swapa, the name Dmitrowskoje became common until the 18th century, after the village church consecrated to Dimitrios of Thessaloniki , Russian Dmitri Solunski .

On May 23, 1779, town charter was granted as the administrative center of a district (Ujesds). The city was given the name Dmitrijew an der Swapa ( Dmitrijew-na-Swape ) to better distinguish it from the cities of Dmitrov ( Moscow governorate ) and Dmitrowsk (not far from the Orjol governorate ). Unofficially, popular abbreviations and reinterpretations of the name such as Dmitroslawsk , Dmitroslawl or Mitroslaw were used; The name suffix was often missing in official documents, such as those of the 1897 census.

In 1929 it was renamed Dmitrijew-Lgowski when the city was temporarily attached to the Lgov Rajon .

During the Second World War , Dmitrijew-Lgowski was occupied by the German Wehrmacht on October 8, 1941 and recaptured on March 2, 1943 by troops of the Central Front of the Red Army while advancing towards Sevsk .
