Sevsk ( Russian Севск ) is a small town in the Brjansk Oblast ( Russia ) with 7282 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The city is located about 150 km south of the Oblast capital, Bryansk, on the Sew river in the Dnieper river system .
Sevsk is the administrative center of the raion of the same name .
history
The place was first mentioned in 1146 as the settlement Sevsko of the Principality of Chernigov named after the river .
From 1356 the city belonged to the Grand Duchy of Lithuania , became part of the Grand Duchy of Moscow in 1500 and became one of the most important fortresses in this part of the country for two centuries (the so-called Gorodok , small town , existed until 1780). In 1634 the fortress withstood a two-week siege by Polish-Lithuanian troops. After 1698 some of the Streliz who had participated in the so-called Second Streliz uprising against Peter the Great were exiled to Sevsk .
In 1778 the town charter was granted as the administrative center of a district (Ujesds). After losing its military importance, the city became a regional trading center.
During the Second World War Sevsk was occupied by the German Wehrmacht on October 1, 1941 and temporarily retaken on March 2, 1943 by troops from the Central Front of the Red Army . On March 27, 1943, the Wehrmacht succeeded in conquering the city again, until it was finally taken on August 27, 1943 by troops of the central front while advancing on Chernihiv and Prypiat .

Culture and sights
In Sevsk are the Assumption Church ( Вознесенская церковь / Wosnessenskaja Zerkow) of 1765, the Peter and Paul Church ( Петропавловская церковь / Petropawlowskaja Zerkow) of 1809 and the Church of the Icon of Our Lady of Kazan , shortly Kazan Church ( Казанская церковь / Kazanskaya Tserkov ) from 1760, as well as the bell towers of the former Assumption Cathedral ( Успенский собор / Uspenski sobor) from 1811 and the Trinity Cathedral ( Троицкий собор церковь / Troitski sobor) from the second half of the 19th century.
The city has a local museum.
Close to the city is the Christ the Transfiguration Monastery, founded as a fortress in 1631 ( Спасо-Преображенский монастырь / Spasso-Preobrazhensky monastyr).
Economy and Infrastructure
In Sevsk as the center of an agricultural area, companies in the food industry dominate (especially canned fruit and vegetables).
Sevsk is on the M3 Moscow –Bryansk– Ukrainian border road and continues to Kiev .
