In 1922 the place was given the name Krasnaja Gora (“ Red Mountain”, with political reference) instead of the religious connotation (“Popenberg”, from “Pope” for a priest of the Orthodox Church ). Accordingly, the Wolost, now part of Ujesd Klinzy, was renamed from Popowogorskaya to Krasnogorskaya and finally converted into a Rajon in 1929.

During the Second World War , Krasnaya Gora was occupied by the German Wehrmacht on August 18, 1941 , and recaptured by the Red Army on September 28, 1943 .

In 1968 the place received the status of an urban-type settlement. The settlement and the surrounding Rajon are among the areas of Russia hardest hit by the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster .
