List of cities in Russia

Fokino ( Russian Фокино ) is a city with 13,876 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010) in the Bryansk Oblast in southwestern Russia . It is located on the Bolwa River , 16 km north of the regional capital, Bryansk . Fokino has formed a district since 2005 , which is enclosed by the Djatkowo district .

history

The place was created in 1899 as a settlement around a cement factory that was built at the same time . This settlement was originally named Zementny accordingly . In 1929 it was given the status of an urban-type settlement under the name Zementny Sawod ("cement works") . The name was later shortened back to Zementny . The place was given its current name in honor of the Brjansk revolutionary Ignati Fokin (1889-1919) when it was granted city rights in 1964.

In the post-war years, many places in Fokino were built on with two- to three-story houses, and German prisoners of war from the Second World War were often employed as workers . Today, however, most of these houses are in disrepair; The city cannot raise any financial means for their renovation or replacement with new buildings.

economy

The most important company in the city is the cement works, founded in 1899, which also mainly employs the population of the city and surrounding places such as Beresino . With up to four million tons of annual production, the plant is the largest of its kind in Europe. However, the mass production of cement causes environmental problems in Fokino, as it emits large amounts of cement dust into the air.

The town's other industrial plants include a slate, reinforced concrete and ceramic pipe mill.

traffic

Fokino is on the Bryansk – Vyazma railway line and has a train station on it. Important road connections exist via Bryansk, where there is a connection to the M3 and M13 main lines . Apart from intercity bus routes, there is no local public transport within the city.
