Zhukovka ( Russian Жуковка ) is a city in the Brjansk Oblast ( Russia ) with 18,269 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The city is located about 60 km northwest of the Oblast capital Brjansk on the left bank of the Desna , a left tributary of the Dnepr , at the confluence of the Wetma river.
Zhukovka is the administrative center of the raion of the same name .
history
Zhukovka was built as a station settlement from 1868 in connection with the construction of the railway between Brjansk and Smolensk , named after the owner of the Zhukov estate .
In 1894 an iron foundry was the first large company to open.
On October 31, 1931 the status of an urban-type settlement and on August 30, 1962 the city charter was granted.

Culture and sights
In the village of Wschtschisch ( Вщиж ), located 30 kilometers south-east in the Zhukovka district, an old Russian city of the same name, which was mentioned in a document in 1142, probably existed since the 9th century. At the beginning of the 12th century it belonged to the lands of the Smolensk and Perejaslav princes Svyatoslav Vladimirovich (son of Vladimir Monomach ), then it became the center of a small autonomous principality, but was destroyed by the Mongols in 1238 . During excavations in the 1840s and 1940s, remains of stone structures, including a church, defensive structures, and handicrafts and art objects were discovered.
There is a Fyodor Tyuttschew museum in the village of Ovstug . The poet and diplomat was born there in 1803.
Economy and Infrastructure
In Zhukovka there is a factory for bicycles ( Desna brand ), a furniture factory and a machine factory.
The town lies on the opened on this section in 1868 railway Smolensk-Bryansk Oryol (then part of the Riga-Oryol Railway ). Here a route branches off to Kletnja, 43 kilometers away .
The A141 Smolensk – Brjansk – Oryol road passes Zhukovka a good ten kilometers southeast.
The Desna is navigable from Zhukovka, but it is only used irregularly for inland navigation.
