The Orjol Governorate ( Russian Орловская губерния / Orlowskaja gubernija ) was an administrative unit of the Russian Empire and the Russian SFSR . The capital was Oryol .

It existed from 1796 to 1928.

The Orjol Governorate bordered the following governorates (clockwise from the north): Kaluga , Tula , Tambov , Voronezh , Kursk , Chernigov, and Smolensk .

The Orjol Governorate was only dissolved in the Russian SFSR of the Soviet Union in 1928 . Its territory was then added to the newly formed Central Black Earth Oblast .

In the first Russian census in 1897, the governorate had 2,033,798 inhabitants on 46,724 km 2 (43 / km 2 ). Over 99% of them were Russians, plus smaller groups of Jews, Germans and Poles.

The harvest in 1902 resulted in: 33,194 tons of wheat, 598,872 tons of rye, 402,636 tons of oats, 44,280 tons of buckwheat, 4723 tons of barley, 5346 tons of peas and 960,089 tons of potatoes. The cultivation of hemp was very important (1902: 29,302 tons of fiber and 62,910 tons of seeds), in which the governorate in Russia came first. Tobacco and some sugar beet were also grown. There were 448,000 horses, 296,000 horned cattle, 955,000 sheep and 174,000 pigs. Horse breeding was maintained in the large state ( Orlowschen ) and numerous private studs. In 1900 the industry employed 43,395 workers in 8,889 industrial plants, but their production was only valued at around 30 million rubles. The majority of the plants were small businesses for the processing and preparation of the hemp and the rope-making. There were larger businesses in the milling, leather and sugar industries. There was a machine and locomotive factory in Bryansk.

In 1926 there were 1,884,533 inhabitants on 30,766 km 2 (61 / km 2 )
