Tula Governorate

The Tula Governorate ( Russian Тульская губерния Tulskaja gubernija ) was an administrative unit of the Russian Empire and the Russian SFSR . It bordered the following governorates (clockwise from the north): Moscow , Ryazan , Tambov , Oryol, and Kaluga .

It existed from 1796 to 1929, the capital being Tula .

The Tula Governorate was only dissolved at the time of the Russian SFSR of the Soviet Union in 1929 and its territory was added to the newly formed Central Industrial Oblast with the capital Moscow .

According to the 1897 census, the governorate had 1,419,456 inhabitants on 30,959 km² (46 / km²). With the exception of smaller groups of Jews, Ukrainians and Poles, almost all of them were Russians.

The harvest in 1905 delivered tons: rye 272,076, oats 256,791, potatoes 488,392, wheat and barley only in good quantities. In 1903 the cattle population was 366,000 horses, 302,000 cattle, 1,150,000 sheep, almost all of which were coarse wool, and 182,000 pigs. Fruit and vegetable cultivation were moderately developed, the former almost only produced apples. The industry in 1900 had 651 factories with 20,160 workers and 16 million rubles of production value. Most important was the sugar industry, which produced for over 5 million rubles. This was followed by metal processing (especially tea machines), iron foundry and brandy distillery. The house industry in metal goods was in decline after 1900. In addition to the industrial products mentioned, the trade sold bristles and grain (especially oats) in large quantities, benefiting from the highly developed railway network for Russian standards at the time. Besides Tula, Belyov was a trading center.

In 1926 there were 1,505,263 inhabitants on 25,464 km² (59 / km²).
