The Ryazan Governorate ( Russian Рязанская губерния / Rjasanskaja gubernija ) was an administrative unit of the Russian Empire and the Russian Soviet Federal Socialist Republic . The capital was the city of Ryazan .

It bordered (clockwise from the north) with the following governorates : Vladimir , Tambov , Tula and Moscow .

The governorate existed from 1796 to 1929. Compared to today 's Ryazan Oblast , it extended further north and south, in particular the north of today 's Lipetsk Oblast belonged to it.

It covered approximately 42,100 km².

Around 1900 it was divided into twelve Ujesdy (circles):

The Ryazan Governorate was not dissolved until the time of the Russian SFSR of the Soviet Union in 1929 and its territory was added to the newly formed Central Industrial Oblast with the capital Moscow.

statistics

In 1897 the governorate had 1,802,196 inhabitants, all of whom were Russian, apart from smaller Ukrainian, Jewish, and Tatar groups.

Economically, Ryazan belonged to the central arable area, or to the black earth region . The main line of business was therefore agriculture. In 1903 the harvest yielded 7,349 tons of wheat, 625,923 tons of rye, 233,272 tons of oats, 5933 tons of buckwheat and 421,185 tons of potatoes. Millet, flax, hemp and tobacco (1903: 16.167 quintals) were also produced. In 1903 the livestock was: 302,000 horses, 329,000 horned cattle, 768,000 (coarse wool) sheep and 135,000 pigs. Hard coal, iron ores, millstones, limestones and pottery clay were mined. In (1900) 4663 factories with 32,441 workers the industry reached a production value of 23.2 million rubles. The main branches were: cotton spinning and weaving (over 10 million rubles), iron industry, grain milling, brick and brandy distillery. The village house industry supplied felt and mat fabrics, lace, scythes and small wooden goods. The previously important shipping on the Oka had declined sharply around 1900 due to rail traffic. Logging and traveling were still important: the carpenters of Ryazan were spread all over Russia.
