The central black earth region ( Russian Центрально-Чернозёмная область ) is a part of the Eurasian black earth belt located in central Russia . It includes the Voronezh Oblast , Lipetsk , Belgorod Oblast , Oblast Tambov , Oryol Oblast and Kursk . Between 1928 and 1934, these areas were administratively combined in a Central Black Earth Oblast with the capital in Voronezh .

The central black earth region is known for its very fertile black earth soils, which gave it its name. Although the region was primarily used for agriculture, the Soviets also promoted industry here , based on the iron ores of the Kursk Magnetic Anomaly .

The area includes a 42 km² biosphere reserve that was created in 1935 on the border between Kursk Oblast and Belgorod Oblast. It serves as a prime example of the forest steppe in Europe and consists of typical untouched steppe land (Zelina) and deciduous forests .
