Ivan Ivanovich Shishkin ( Russian Иван Иванович Шишкин , scientific. Transliteration Ivan Ivanovich Šiškin ; January 13 * . Jul / 25. January  1832 greg. In Yelabuga , † March 8 jul. / 20th March  1898 greg. In Saint Petersburg ) was a Russian painter and graphic artist and a member of the Peredwischniki .

Life

Born the son of a businessman , he found it very difficult to achieve his career aspiration to become a painter.

He completed his training at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture . He then took up studies at the Petersburg Art Academy , which he successfully completed in 1860 with an award. In 1865 he was given a teaching position at his former training facility and later took on a professorship . At the same time he taught landscape painting at a higher art school .

Schischkin also lived and worked for several years in Switzerland and Germany (1862 Dresden , 1863 Zurich and 1864/65 Düsseldorf ). After his return to Russia he became a member of the Peredwischniki and the Society of Russian Watercolor Painters .

He also took part in exhibitions at the Academy of Arts, the All-Russian Exhibition in Moscow in 1882 and the World Exhibitions in Paris in 1867 , Vienna in 1873 and again in Paris in 1878 .

Shishkin's style was based on analytical studies of nature. He is considered an outstanding painter of natural landscapes, but was also an excellent draftsman and lithographer . His pictures are characterized by profound Russian symbolism. He is considered to be one of the most important landscape painters and representatives of naturalism in Russian painting.

In 1994 the asteroid (3558) Shishkin was named after him.
