history

An artisan and trading village (Sloboda), which has existed since at least the 15th century, on the site of today's town was first mentioned in 1629 under the name Waskina Poljana, also known as the village of Spassk . It belonged to the Savior-Saretschensky Monastery ( Спас-Зареченский монастырь / Spas-Saretschenski monastyr) , which was founded in the 15th century and closed in 1764 . The word spas for savior was carried over to the place; Zarechensky , about behind the river , refers to the location opposite the original city of Ryazan, which was destroyed by the Mongols under Batu Khan in 1237 (later and until today called the village of Staraya Ryazan , Old Ryazan ).

In 1778 the town charter was granted as the administrative center of a district (Ujesds) Spassk . In 1929, the name addition Ryazansky was added to distinguish it from other cities of the same name ( Spassk in Penza Oblast and Spassk-Dalni in Primorye ) .
