Sassowo ( Russian Сасово ; scientific transliteration Sasovo ) is a city in the Ryazan Oblast ( Russia ) with 28,118 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The city is located on the south-eastern edge of the Meshchora lowland about 180 km southeast of the Oblast capital Ryazan on the Zna , a left tributary of the Mokscha in the river system of the Volga .
Sassowo is administratively directly subordinate to the Oblast and at the same time the administrative center of the Rajon of the same name .
history
The village of Sassowo was first mentioned in 1642.
In the 18th century, rope production was an important industry (see city arms); By the middle of the 19th century the village developed into a regionally important trading center.
After the railway line opened in 1893, railway companies were relocated.
In 1926 the place received city rights.

Culture and sights
The city has a local museum.
18 kilometers to the north, in the village of Kargaschino in the Sassowo district, is the ensemble of the 19th century former country estate of the German-Baltic Baron von der Launitz.
Economy and Infrastructure
In Sassowo there are companies that manufacture machinery and equipment, for agricultural machinery, and for the textile and food industries.
The city lies on the railway line Moscow -Rjasan- Ruzayevka - Syzran (distance 381 kilometers).
The regional road R124 Schazk - Kassimow runs through Sassowo .
