Schilowo ( Russian Ши́лово ) is an urban-type settlement in the Ryazan Oblast ( Russia ) with 15,669 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The settlement is located in the north of the Oka-Don plain and south of the Meschtschora lowlands, about 80 kilometers as the crow flies southeast of the administrative center of Ryazan . It extends on the right bank of the right arm of the Oka , a little above the confluence of the Para .

Shilowo is the administrative center of the Shilowo Rajon of the same name .

history

Before the Mongol invasion of the Rus , the town of Nersk or Nelsk existed in the place of the current settlement in the 11th to 12th centuries . It was first mentioned in the chronicles of 1147 and was an important center of trade and handicrafts. After the destruction by the Mongols, the place was rebuilt and came into the possession of the Shilovsky boyar family in the 14th century . After this he was referred to as Schilowskoje or Schilowo . Towards the end of the 14th century, Shilovo was listed as a "city" in a "List of Ryazan Cities".

After the Principality of Ryazan , to which the town belonged, was finally annexed to the Grand Duchy of Moscow at the beginning of the 16th century, sections of the Verhauline line of the Moscow state , the Saposchoker Line and the Shazker Line , emerged in the area around Shilovo . During this time there was a landing stage on the Oka that was important for the grain trade. Towards the end of the 17th century, Schilowo was only a smaller settlement.

The place took off from the end of the 19th century, when the railway line was passed, which connected Moscow via Ryazan and Rusajewka with Kazan and a little later via Syzran with Samara . On this section, the line was opened on September 13, 1893 by the private company of the Moscow-Kazan Railway .

As part of an administrative reform, Schilowo became the administrative center of a newly founded Rajons in 1929. In 1938 it received urban-type settlement status.

Culture and sights

In Schilowo is Dormition Church ( Церковь Успения Пресвятой Богородицы , Zerkow Uspenija Preswjatoi Bogoroditsy ), also briefly , Uspensky church get that built on the site of an older wooden church in the middle of the 19th century and in 1864 ordained was.

Economy and Infrastructure

In Schilowo there are companies in the building materials industry (sand and clays, precast concrete parts, plastic pipes and tarpaulins) and the food industry (meat, starch, vegetable oil).

The settlement is located on the Moscow - Rusajewka - Samara railway line (308 km). The M5 trunk road runs a few kilometers south of the town and connects Moscow with Chelyabinsk via Samara and Ufa . At Schilowo the regional road 61K-009 branches off from this, which leads down the Oka to Kassimow , while the trunk road leaves the course of the Oka, which it followed from Kolomna at varying distances for more than 150 kilometers.

Schilowo has a landing stage along the inland waterway on the Oka. The Nizhny Novgorod  - Ryazan oil pipeline and the "Central Asia - Center " natural gas pipeline run a little south of the town .
