Lesnoi ( Russian Лесно́й ) is an urban-type settlement in the Ryazan Oblast in Russia with 7632 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

The place is located almost 70 km as the crow flies southeast of the Ryazan Oblast Administrative Center in the Oka-Don plain between the right-hand Oka tributaries Pronja and Para .

Lesnoi belongs to the Shilovsky Rajons and is located about 30 km southwest of its administrative center Shilovo . It is the seat and the municipality of Lesnowskoje gorodskoje posselenije, which also includes the five villages Aljochowo (3 km west-north-west), Malinowka (7 km east), Novaya Derevnia (4 km west), Novaya Pustyn (north-east adjoining) and Novoyershovo (5.5 km northwest) as well as the five settlements Jamskoi (4 km northeast), Krasny Lutsch (7 km west-northwest), Munjakowskije Vyselki (7 km west-southwest), Novomossolowski and Seljony Bor (correspondingly 3 and 5 km east-southeast) belong.

history

The place was created from 1955 in connection with the start of construction of an explosives plant in the large forest area to the south. The plant, which is subordinate to the Ministry of Defense, was given the camouflage name for synthetic fiber plant "Elastik". On January 11, 1961 it received its current name, Russian for "forest settlement". Since February 12, 1964, Lesnoi has had the status of an urban-type settlement.

About 5 km north of the settlement is the Novaya Pustyn train station at 278 km on the Moscow  - Ryazan - Rusajewka  - Syzran line . From there a freight siding leads to the explosives plant.

Past the train station, the road from Lesnoi leads to the M5 Ural federal trunk road, a good 10 km north of the village of Mossolowo , which connects Moscow to Chelyabinsk via Samara .
