history
In 1758 the brothers Andrej and Iwan Bataschow, who were mine owners and steel manufacturers, bought the area in order to organize a steel factory here. This ore district, with the abundance of forest and water near the Oka River, which could be used as a thoroughfare, offered great advantages to mining and steel industries. The village of Werputez located here (also mentioned as Werkuzy) was renamed Gus-Schelesny ( Scheleso means iron ). From 1783 Andrei Bataschow (1724–1799), the oldest brother, was the owner of Gus-Schelesny. In the 1780s a large mansion was built for him, where his descendants lived until the October Revolution . In 1766 a wooden Johanneskirche was built, which was destroyed by fire in 1812. In 1802 the construction of a remarkable Trinity Church began . This is one of the main attractions of Gus-Schelesny.
The settlement has 1847 inhabitants (2017). In the middle of the 19th century the population was three times larger.
