Siluan of Athos

Starez Siluan ( Russian Силуан Афонский ; * 1866 in the parish village of Schowskoje, Lebedin district in Tambov Oblast ; † September 24, 1938 ), whose real name was Simeon Ivanovich Antonov, was a Russian monk and mystic of the Orthodox Church .

Life

Siluan was born as the son of a Russian farmer and entered the Russian Panteleimon monastery on Mount Athos in 1892 after his military service . In 1896 he was dressed and in 1911 took the Schima . He spent his monastic service on the mill, on the Metoche Kalamare, on the Stary Russik (Old Monastery on Mount Athos) and in the monastery food store as an economist .

meaning

Siluan lived in secrecy and was only known after his death. Today he is regarded as the saint of the heart prayer , which he was given early on as a novice in a higher, everlasting degree. His mystical writings are read by many people who practice the Jesus prayer . Siluan became known to a wider circle through the book Starez Siluan - Monk from Mount Athos by Archimandrite Sophroni Sakharov .

There is one of the few chapels consecrated to him in Munich that belongs to the Romanian Orthodox Church .
