Spassk ( Russian Спасск ) is a small town in Penza Oblast ( Russia ) with 7,442 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The city is located on the western edge of the Volga plate about 160 km northwest of the Oblast capital Penza on the Studenez river in the river system of the Volga .
Spassk is the administrative center of the Rajons of the same name .
The M5 Moscow –Samara– Chelyabinsk road runs through Spassk .
history
The place originated in the 17th century as Bogdanowo and was later renamed Spasskoje (from Russian spas for savior ) according to its church . In 1779 the place received the city charter under its current name (also Spassk-na-Studenze , i.e. Spassk am Studenez to distinguish it from other places of the same name).
In 1925 the city was renamed Bednodemjanowsk , in honor of the proletarian poet Demjan Bedny (1883–1945, actually Jefim Alexejewitsch Pridvorov). In 2005 the city got its old name again.

Culture and sights
The Church of the Assumption ( Церковь Вознесения / zerkow Vosnessenija) from 1859 has been preserved in Spassk , along with other buildings from the 19th and early 20th centuries, such as the aristocratic club, the elementary school, the district police administration and an inn. In the nearby village of Abaschewo there is a museum of the traditionally made toys.
