Sursk ( Russian Сурск ) is a small town in Penza Oblast ( Russia ) with 7034 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The city is located about 90 km east of the oblast capital Penza on the left bank of the Sura , a right tributary of the Volga .

Sursk belongs to the Gorodishchensky Rajon and is located about 20 km south of its administrative seat, the small town of Gorodishche .

The city is located near the railway Ryazhsk -Pensa- Sysran (Station Assejewskaja ).

history

A place in the place of today's town was established near the older village of Nikolskoye in 1849 under the name of Nikolsky Khutor in connection with the establishment of an important weaving mill.

In 1928 the place became an urban-type settlement . During the Second World War , a machine factory from Vyshny Volotschok in the western part of the Soviet Union was relocated to Nikolsky Khutor. In August 1953 the place was given city rights under its current name (after the river).

economy

The town-building company is the weaving mill Surskaja manufaktura (formerly Textile Combine ). The canvases for the Panorama Stalingrad Battle in Volgograd (1982) and for the Peasants' War panorama in Bad Frankenhausen ( Germany ) were woven in the weaving mill .

There are also companies in the food industry.
