history

Old city coat of arms (1781)

The place was built in 1636 as a guard fortress as part of the Lomow defense line on the Lomowka river (also simply Lomow ) and was named after this. The settlement around the fortress was given the name Lomovskaya Sloboda , later its current name and under this name in 1780 the town charter . The name means Lower Lomow , to distinguish it from the village of Verkhni Lomow , eight kilometers to the southwest - Upper Lomow , which also had town charter until the 20th century.

Since the end of the 18th century Nizhny Lomow was one of the most important regional trading centers; in the 19th century it became a center of match production.
