Nizhny Lomow ( Russian: Нижний Ломов ) is a city in Penza Oblast ( Russia ) with 22,678 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The city is located on the western edge of the Volga plate about 100 km northwest of the oblast capital Penza on the Lomowka , a left tributary of the Mokscha in the river system of the Volga .
Nizhny Lomow is the administrative center of the raion of the same name .
Nizhny Lomow is the end point of a 33-kilometer branch line from the Vygljadowka station on the Ryashsk –Penza – Samara railway (freight traffic only). The M5 Moscow- Samara- Chelyabinsk road (bypass road north of the city center) also runs through Nizhny Lomov .
history
The place was built in 1636 as a guard fortress as part of the Lomow defense line on the Lomowka river (also simply Lomow ) and was named after this. The settlement around the fortress was given the name Lomovskaya Sloboda , later its current name and under this name in 1780 the town charter . The name means Lower Lomow , to distinguish it from the village of Verkhni Lomow , eight kilometers to the southwest - Upper Lomow , which also had town charter until the 20th century.
Since the end of the 18th century Nizhny Lomow was one of the most important regional trading centers; in the 19th century it became a center of match production.

Culture and sights
A number of buildings from the 19th century have been preserved in Nizhny Lomov, such as the wooden building of the former Zemstvo hospital .
There has been a local museum since 1967.
