Vadinsk ( Russian Вадинск ) is a village and former city in Penza Oblast ( Russia ) with 4891 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010). It was formerly called Kerensk and was founded in 1636 as a fortified town, named Vadinsk in 1940 after the name of the river Vad.

The town lies on the north western edge of the Volga Upland , about 180 km northwest of the Oblasthauptstadt Penza at the Association of river Wad and Kerenka for Wad in the river system of Moksha . Southeast of Vadinsk, next to the villages of Karmaleika and Jaganowka, there is the Wadinsk water reservoir, also known as the Wadinsk Lake, with a water volume of around 21.4 million m³.

Wadinsk is the administrative center of the raion of the same name .

The place was first mentioned in 1636 when a fortification was built here. In 1780 the place was given city rights under the name Kerensk - after the Kerenka River.

In 1683 the Tikhvin nunnery was founded in Kerensk on the place where, according to legend, the icon of the Tikhvin Mother of God appeared.

During the Pugachev uprising , Kerensk was the only fortification that was not abandoned. In gratitude for this, Catherine the Great had the golden crown presented to the city and its people.

At the beginning of the 20th century Kerensk was one of the largest cities in the Penza Governorate . In 1940 the name was changed because of the association with the name Alexander Kerensky , and Kerensk was named Vadinsk after the river Vad and lost its town charter.
