Novosil ( Russian Новосиль ) is a small town in the Oryol Oblast ( Russia ) with 3658 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The city is located on the Central Russian Plate about 70 km east of the oblast capital Oryol on the right bank of the Suscha , a right tributary of the Oka, which flows into the Volga .

Nowosil is the administrative center of the Rajons of the same name .

history

The place was first mentioned in 1155 as the Itil fortress of the Principality of Chernigov . At the beginning of the 14th century, it was already the capital of a small, independent principality under the name Novosil .

At the beginning of the 15th century, the city fell to the Grand Duchy of Lithuania , towards the end of the century again to the Grand Duchy of Moscow , to whose southern border fortresses it belonged until the 17th century.

In 1777 the town charter as the administrative center of a district ( Ujesds ) was first granted to the governor and then to the Tula governorate .

During the Second World War , Novosil was occupied by the German Wehrmacht on November 13, 1941 , but was recaptured on December 27, 1941 by troops of the Brjansk Front of the Red Army as part of a counter-attack in the direction of Oryol.

Located away from the main transport links, the city has barely developed economically to this day.

Culture and sights

In Novosil a number of buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries have been preserved, such as the Cathedral of the Mother of God ( собор Божией Матери / sobor Boschjej Materi) from the end of the 18th century, the Church of the Icon of Our Lady of Kazan , or Kazan Church for short ( Казанская церковь / Kasanskaja zerkow) from 1802 and stone houses from the 19th century.

In the village of Golun in Novosil district is the former country residence of the Golitsyn family .

In Novosil, as the center of an agricultural area, there are companies in the food industry.

Nearest railway station is Sale Gosch sealed at the 1870 opened distance Orjol- Yelets - gryazi at 14 Kilometers away. By Novosil the regional road leads Orjol- Efremov .
