Verkhovye ( Russian Верхо́вье ) is an urban-type settlement in the Oryol Oblast in Russia with 7173 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The village is located around 80 km in a straight line east-southeast of Oblastverwaltungszentrums Oryol .
Werchowje is the administrative center of the Rajons Werchowski and seat and only town of the municipality (gorodskoje posselenije) Werchowje.
history
The place was first mentioned in 1815. An economic boom came with the passing of the Orjol - Jelez railway in the 1860s.
In 1928 Verkhovye became the administrative seat of the newly created Rajons named after him. During the Second World War , the place was captured by the German Wehrmacht on November 14, 1941 , but was recaptured by the Red Army on December 19 .
On January 20, 1958, the place received the status of an urban-type settlement.

Verkhovye has a train station at kilometer 92 of the Oryol - Jelez - Lipetsk - Grjasi railway line, which opened on this section in 1870 . In a southerly direction, a line branches off via Liwny to Possjolok imeni Lenina ( Marmyschi station ) in Kursk Oblast . This was opened in 1871 to Liwny as one of the first longer narrow-gauge railways in the Russian Empire , but at the end of the 1890s it was converted from the original Cape gauge to broad gauge and extended to Marmyschi.
Regional road 54K-6 runs through the settlement from Salegoschtsch to Khomutowo and Krasnaya Sarja . In a south-westerly direction there is a connection to the federal trunk road R119 Oryol - Lipetsk - Tambov near Pokrovskoye via the 54K-4 , as well as via the 54K-5, which follows the railway line to Livny.
