history

The village Archangelskoje, founded in the 17th century (from Russian Archangel for Archangel , after the name of the village church) received city rights in 1778 as the administrative center of a district (Ujesds) of the governorship of Orjol under the name Maly Archangelski gorodok ( Little Archangel Town , to differentiate from at that time usually Archangelski gorodok called Arkhangelsk ).

When the governorates were reorganized in 1796, the town lost its town charter for a short time, but it was renewed in 1802. Over time, the city name was simplified to today's form.

During the Second World War , Maloarchangelsk was occupied by the German Wehrmacht on November 11, 1941 and recaptured on February 23, 1943 by troops from the Brjansk Front of the Red Army . In the area west of Maloarchangelsk, the Soviet counteroffensive in the northern part of the so-called Kursk Arc began in the summer of 1943.
