Lensk ( Russian Ленск , Yakut Ленскэй / Lenskej ) is a city in the Sakha Republic (Yakutia) in Russia . It has 24,966 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
Lensk is located on the left bank of the East Siberian river Lena , on the southern edge of the Lenaplateau , about 800 kilometers west of the republic capital Yakutsk .
Lensk is the administrative center of the Lensk Raion of the same name .
history
Was founded in the village by Russian fur hunters in 1663 as Muchtukujewskaja at the site of an older Evenk settlement Muchtui called, derived from the Evenk words for big water .
As part of Bering's second Kamchatka expedition, a post office was built in what is now called Muchtuja . In the 19th and early 20th centuries, Muchtuja was a place of political banishment .
After diamond deposits were discovered in the catchment area of the Wiljui , the largest left tributary of the Lena, around today's town of Mirny , the location was chosen as the closest base camp for development, about 250 kilometers away. Muchtuja was renamed Lensk in 1963 on the occasion of the granting of city rights and refers to the river names.
During the Lena flood in May 2001, Lensk came into the focus of the global public for a short time. As a result of the flooding caused by ice jams , almost the entire city was flooded and a large part of the buildings were destroyed. After the floods, the city was rebuilt.

Economy and Infrastructure
In Lensk there is a branch of the diamond group ALROSA , companies in the forest and building materials industry and the food industry.
The city is an important river port on the Lena. From here a 750 km long solid road leads to the diamond mining areas of West Yakutia, via Mirny and Chernyshevsky on the dam of the Vilyui reservoir to Aichal and Udatschny , with a road connection to Yakutsk via Mirny. A road following the left Lenaufer downstream ends after almost 100 kilometers at Njuja .
