Neryungri is one of the youngest cities in Russia: It was founded in 1975 as part of the development of a nearby coal deposit. The name of the city is derived from the small river Nerjungri, whose name comes from the Evenk language and means " rich in ash ". Hard coal mining and the processing of hard coal still dominate the economic life of the city today.
Since the city was founded, it has consisted of two parts of the city: the "old town", in which mainly industrial companies are located, and the "new town" with the residential areas.
