history
In 1955, the Udatschnaja kimberlite vent (66.4 N, 112.3 O) was discovered, but initially not exploited because of its far more northerly location compared to the diamond deposits near Mirny. In 1968 the settlement named after the chimney was built ( udatschny and udatschnaja are Russian adjective forms of udatscha for luck , success ). In 1987 the place received city rights.
On October 2, 1974, an underground nuclear explosion of 1.7 kilotons was carried out 7 kilometers northwest of the village, 4 km from the diamond mine, under the code name Kristall at a shallow depth (98 m) 66 ° 27 ′ 26.2 ″ N , 112 ° 23 '56.1 " O . With eight originally planned blasts, a reservoir was to be built for the waste water from the factory to enrich the diamond-bearing rock. However, due to problems with radioactive products that had leaked contrary to the plans , one blast was left - one of the few ever carried out with civilian goals. It was not until 18 years later that the borehole in which the blast took place was sealed with a rock "sarcophagus" that was estimated to be seven to twenty meters thick.
