Pokrowsk ( Russian Покровск , Yakut Покровскай / Pokrowskaj ) is a city in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) in Russia with 9,495 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The city is located in the south of the Central Yakut Lowlands , about 75 km southwest of the republic capital Yakutsk , on the left bank of the Lena .
The city of Pokrovsk is administratively directly subordinate to the republic and at the same time the administrative center of the Rajon (Ulus) Changalasski.
The R501 road leads through Pokrovsk, the last 100 kilometers before Jakutsk an alternative route to the M56 ( Lena ) road on the other side of Lenaufer .
history
Pokrovsk was founded in 1682 by Cossacks as Ostrog Karaulny Mys (Russian for guard post cape ). The village of Pokrovskoye (after the Russian Orthodox Pokrov (Preswjatoi Bogorodizy) for the protection of the Virgin Mary and Intercession ) was later established . In 1941 the place was elevated to an urban-type settlement under its current name , and in 1998 it received city rights.

Culture, education and sights
The Center for Northern Agriculture and Selection of the Yakut Agricultural Research Institute is located in Pokrovsk .
Since 1962 there has been a local museum in town, which has been named Gawriil Ksenofontows (1888–1938) since 1992 , who is considered the first Yakut historian , ethnographer and folklorist and was a victim of Stalin's Great Terror .
In the village of Kjordjom on the opposite Lenaufer stands the Nikolski Church . There are various archaeological sites and rock carvings in the Ulus. About 50 kilometers upriver, the rock formations of Lenskije stolby ( Lena's columns ) begin on the right Lenaufer .
economy
In Pokrovsk there are construction (brick, precast concrete, asphalt) and timber industries. In addition, the city is the center of an agricultural area (grain, vegetables, cattle, horse and fur farming).
