Suntar ( Russian Сунтар ; Yakut Сунтаар / Suntaar ) is a village in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) with 10,034 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The settlement is located on the northern edge of the Lena Plateau , about 630 kilometers as the crow flies west of the republic capital Yakutsk , on the left bank of the Vilyui .
Suntar is the administrative center of the Ulus (Rajons) Suntarski and, as its only locality, the seat of the rural community (selskoje posselenije) Suntarski nasleg. Over 90% of the population are Yakuts . One breed of the Yakut horse is named after Suntar.
history
The founding year of the place is 1764, when the Russian-Orthodox Church of the Church of the Virgin Mary Temple (Vvedensky Church) was built in the area, which has been populated by Yakuts since the 17th century . The place that developed around the church developed into the center of the Nasleg (lowest Yakut administrative unit) Suntarski by the end of the 19th century; on November 24, 1910 he received the official status of a village (selo) together with the nearby, now defunct settlement Novo-Alexandrowka .
With the establishment of the Rajon (today Ulus) Suntarski on January 9, 1930, the village became its administrative seat.

Culture and sights
In Suntar there is a museum complex dedicated to the Yakut folk singer Sergei Swerew-Kyyl Uola (1900–1973), who was born in Nasleg .
Economy and Infrastructure
Suntar is the center of an agricultural area (cattle and horse husbandry, cultivation of grain, vegetables and fodder plants) with several processing companies for regional needs.
The village lies on the highway A331 Vilyuy River on the section Yakutsk with the diamond mining town of Mirny connects the west of the republic. To the east of the village, the Wiljui is crossed by a ferry in summer and by ice road in winter .
In Suntar there is a pier at the navigable Wijui and about three kilometers to the north a small airport ( ICAO code UENS ), from which there is a connection with the capital of the republic.
