Nyurba ( Russian Нюрба , Yakut Ньурба ) is a small town in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) ( Russia ) with 10,157 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The city is located in the Central Yakut Lowlands , about 850 km northwest of the republic capital Yakutsk , on the river Vilyui , a left tributary of the Lena . The climate is continental.

The city of Nyurba is administratively directly subordinate to the republic and at the same time the administrative center of the Rajon of the same name (Ulus).

Njurba has an airport and a pier at the Wiljui.

history

A place in the place of today's city has been known since the middle of the 18th century. The modern settlement was built in 1930. In the 1950s it became the basis for exploring the West Yakut diamond deposits . In 1958 the place received the status of an urban-type settlement and in 1998 city rights.

Culture and sights

Since 1978 there has been a museum of friendship between peoples in Nyurba.

economy

The state-owned Russian diamond company ALROSA maintains a diamond grinding shop in Nyurba. The place is a regional transport and supply base (including a fuel store). There is also food and light industry, and agriculture in the area.
