Shatai ( Russian and Yakut Жатай ) is an urban-type settlement in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) in Russia with 9504 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The settlement is located in the central part of the republic, on the left bank of the Lena about 15 kilometers north (downstream) of the republic capital Yakutsk . Because of its location in the flat flood plain of the Lena, the only good six kilometers west of the steeply to over 200 m rising height Lena Plateau is limited, the place is highly prone to flooding . Parts of the settlement are flooded every spring.
Schatai forms an independent urban district (gorodskoi okrug) .
The climate is extremely continental . With an annual mean temperature of −10.2 ° C, the mean temperature in the coldest month of January is −42.7 ° C, in the warmest month of July +18.7 ° C. The difference between the lowest (−64.4 ° C) and highest (+38.3 ° C) per measured temperature exceeds 100 ° C.
history
In April 1929, the today's settlement with the establishment of was in place state farm for cereals, meat and dairy farming started. At first the village belonged to the Yakutsk Raion .
From 1936 a large tank farm was built . 1939, the Council of Ministers of the decided Yakut ASSR and the Chief Directorate of the Northern Sea Route (Glavsevmorput) to a dead channel of the Lena at Zhatay (Schataiski SATON) of a port for the wintering of ships Northern Fleet to build. The resolution was implemented in the following years; other storage and construction facilities also emerged. On April 28, 1948, Shatai received the status of an urban-type settlement, which was directly subordinated to the administration of the nearby city of Yakutsk.
As part of the administrative reform in Russia, Shatai was spun off into an independent urban district by the law of November 30, 2004.

Economy and Infrastructure
Local companies are the Jakutsk tank farm (Jakutskaja neftebasa) and a ship repair yard for the Lena fleet.
The regional road R503 passes to the west of the settlement and follows the left Lenaufer from Jakutsk to the district administrative center of Namzy .
