The Abyjski ulus ( Russian Абы́йский улу́с , also Абыйский район , Abyjski rajon; Yakut Абый улууһа , Abyj uluuha ) is one of the 34 uluses ( Rajons ) of the Sakha Republic of the Eastern Russian Federation in the north of the Russian Federation .
geography
It is located in the north of the republic inland north of the continental divide and the Arctic Circle between the Jana and Kolyma rivers . It borders north on Allaichowski ulus and south on Momski ulus . Abyjski ulus is traversed from southwest to northeast by the more than 1700 km long Indigirka , which rises far south in Oimjakonski ulus . The administrative seat of Belaja Gora (Yakut, Ürüng Chaja) is also located on its right bank .
The Ulus has an area of around 69,400 km², almost as large as the German state of Bavaria .
In the north the terrain is flat except for a few hills, in the south-east it is hilly to mountainous. The vegetation consists mainly of tundra , some areas are cold desert . In the southeast there are islands of taiga on mountain slopes .

The population almost doubled between 1959 and 1989, but has now decreased by more than a quarter:

Communities
The Ulus consists of six municipalities: one urban municipality (gorodskoje posselenije) and five rural municipalities (selskoje posselenije) (called nasleg in Yakutia ) with a total of only seven localities.
