Sangar ( Russian Санга́р ; Yakut Сангаар ) is an urban-type settlement in the Sakha Republic (Yakutia) in Russia with 4,377 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The place is about 240 km as the crow flies north-northwest of the republic capital Yakutsk in the Central Yakut lowlands . It is located on the right bank of the Lena , about 10 km above the confluence of the Chochuma tributary . To the southeast of the village, the 430  m high mountain Baatal-Chajata rises above the otherwise mostly flat Lena valley in this area .

Sangar is the administrative center of Ulus Kobjaiski . The settlement is the seat of the municipality (gorodskoje posselenije) Possjolok Sangar, which also includes the villages of Aviaport (4 km northwest) and Smoroditschny (a good 3 km southeast, both on the Lenaufer).

history

The settlement was founded in 1928 in connection with the beginning of the development of a hard coal deposit. Sangar has had urban-type settlement status since 1940. In 1959 the administrative seat of the ulus was moved from Kobjai village to Sangar.

As a result of the cessation of coal mining in the 1990s, more than half of the residents left the place.

Sangar is not connected to the fixed road network; There is only a connection to the places of the community. In the ice-free time there is a ship connection on the Lena; in winter an ice road is created on the river. The town's airport near the village of Awiaport ( ICAO code UEMS ) is currently not regularly served.
