The Wiljui reservoir ( Russian Вилюйское водохранилище , Wiljuiskoje Vodochranilishche; other spellings are: Viljuj, Vilyuy or Vilyuyskoye or similar) is a large reservoir on the Lena tributary, Wiljui, in Siberia ( Russia ). The Tschona also flows into the Vilyui reservoir.
For the storage capacity of the reservoir one finds the information 35,900 and 40,400 million m³ (of which usable space: 22,400 million m³), for the water surface 1200, 2170 or 2360 km². With the largest values in each case, this results in an average water depth of 17 meters; the greatest water depth is 60 meters.
The dam ( ⊙ ) was built in the 1960s not far from the Chernyshevsky settlement; the hydropower plant was finished in 1976. The barrier structure is a dam made of earth and stone rubble. The hydroelectric power plant operated by Jakutskenergo uses eight turbines with a total output of 680 megawatts of electricity.
Due to the irregular seasonal flow of water in the Wiljui, the generation of electricity varied in such a way that large-scale consumers of the power plant's electrical energy, the diamond mines in Mirny and the associated companies, had to cut back production at times.
