history

The monastery was built in 1653 by the Patriarch Nikon . The first Russian provincial printing house worked here. One of the most important tasks of the monks was to translate books from ancient script into the Russian language.

In 1917, the year of the Russian Revolution , over 400 books in the monastery library were burned. Courageous citizens in Valdai, however, brought many books and art treasures to safety. In the newly built museum of local history you can find some of these unique testimonies from a bygone era. The monastery was closed in 1927 and the buildings were subsequently used as workshops, a hospital, school, sanatorium and rest home. In 1991 it was returned to the church and reopened as a monastery.
